OUR STORY

Water sachet pollution is a big problem in Ghana and throughout West Africa. As tap water in Ghana is unsafe to drink, water is consumed via cheap, small, plastic sachets. Once empty, however, the sachets are often tossed on the ground as there is little infrastructure for waste disposal nor an understanding of the problems plastic waste can cause. Plastic dumped in the streets ends up blocking drains, which leads to seasonal flooding, while other waste finds its way to the sea or to large dump sites. Left unattended, these dump sites can grow to such sizes that they leave entire communities uninhabitable while also increasing the probability for the spreading of disease.

Since 2007, Trashy Bags has collected and recycled over 20 million plastic sachets. Every month nearly 200,000 plastic sachets are brought to the Trashy Bags factory by a network of local Ghanaians. For many, sachet collection is their only source of income.

I had never designed anything in my life or even cut a piece of material but this is where my path started to change and I realized I had a creative streak."
